This is a classic – but not in every aspect: Vasily Medvedev and Yuri Burlaka, two Russian choreographers and connoisseurs of the tradition, have developed a version of “Nutcracker” which is based on the historic stage designs and choreography from the original of 1892.
Nevertheless, having the classic piece at hands, Medvedev points out he wouldn’t be seriously saying he had anything like a reconstruction of the original piece in mind.
Instead, the Staatsballet Berlin plays a version that stars the historic costumes but rocks the SHIT out of the choreography – being nostagical on first glance, while giving the dancers room to show off all of their technical skills – which are by far exceeding those historical folks.
In combination with the brilliance of today’s dancers, the production reveals all of its nostalgic charm to the music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky.
This loving reconstruction premiered at Deutsche Oper Berlin in the fall of 2013.
