James Holden‘s follow up album to 2013’s lauded The Inheritors sees the British artist hanging up the headphones and being reborn as a live musician and band leader. Inhabiting a radically different space, where the trance traditions of Moroccan Gwana suffuse Holden’s new found spiritual jazz inclinations, The Spirit Animals is a product of instinct and intuition, a genre-blending new form of universal music that feels inherently fluid and alive, born out of the sheer unbridled joy of live performance.
On his third studio album, Holden has enlisted a full fledged band consisting of long-time collaborators Tom Page (RocketNumberNine) and Etienne Jaumet as well as Marcus Hamblett, Liza Bec and Lascelle Gordon. The Animal Spirits was recorded live in one room together with the band, in single takes, no overdubs, no edits, in accordance with his own self-imposed dogma. As we peer through the looking glass into a new realm of inherently organic live electronic musical performance, it feels that Holden won’t be going back to the prison of the rigid world of computer beats.
