In 2017, Swans frontman Michael Gira announced the end of the current line-up of the band. Swans will return with a rotating cast and while the project is on a temporary pause, the New-York bandleader will continue touring solo, appearing this Sunday February 18th at Berlin’s Volksbühne as part of his European tour.

Swans need little introduction. Emerging out of New-York’s No Wave scene in the early 80s, the band has gone through multiple incarnations and sonic worlds, traversing noise, industrial and post-rock, and marking spirits with its somewhat difficult and brutal sound. It’s the type of band that techno and rock heads will agree on and the general consensus is that seeing them live is a unique experience. One should expect the shows to be LOUD AS FUCK.

As a solo performer, Michael Gira is no less intense than with his band, channeling the heaviness, unease and sonic weights of Swans into a stripped back guitar and voice combo. Michael Gira explains: “Sitting there alone on stage with a dead piece of wood and some wires and just my voice is a challenge I set for myself a number of years ago, trying to fully inhabit the same thread that’s run through the music all along, with the simplest of means. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it over time. I play the guitar my own way. I’ve never really learned how to play it conventionally and I don’t care to do so. I could just as easily be hitting two rocks together. It provides a context for the voice and words, and just as in the music of Swans, when all the elements (known and unknowable) combine, it can lead to something beyond itself, which is always the place I’d like to go: somewhere else. I hope to see you there.”
