Boomtown Fair, to put it lightly, is one of the craziest festival experiences.
Spread out over the sprawling Matterley Bowl estate, close to Winchester, the festival-city returns for its ninth edition, bringing the best in ska, hip-hop, punk, reggae and all flavors of electronic. This year, the likes of The Specials, M.I.A., Cypress Hill, Sublime, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Ben UFO b2b Mr Scruff b2b Joy Orbison, Carl Craig, The Four Owls, Loefah and Black Sun Empire are all making the trip.
But Boomtown’s appeal lies not just in the lineup but in the festival’s immersive environment, a full-blown dystopian city that comes to life for four days. The music and event programme is split across districts, each boasting standout settings and characters. The humongous Indiana Jones inspired Trenchtown temple plays host to the majority of reggae acts, Sector-6 and Dstrkt 5 provide the electronic goods, Mayfair is the ideal setting to get involved for all swing and soul fans and many more districts, sub-areas and hidden venues are there to be discovered. The site also boasts a full programme of art, performance, theatre, comedy and workshops.
