Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal is the new project of Placebo co-founder and bassist Stefan Olsdal and Miguel Lopez Mora aka Digital 21, a Spanish musician, producer and video artist who has performed in festivals the likes of Sziget, Sonar and Benicassim while maintaining an active profile in the fields of DJing, video and ballet.
Rebellion, the duo’s debut EP, sees them apply a live take on the techno format with 2 tracks of tense, borderline orchestral techno. The baron of techno Dave Clarke and Spanish newcomer Alex Guerra also dropped in with 2 club-ready remixes of the title track.
We hooked up with Miguel and Stefan via email to get to know a bit more about the project and what is next on the cards for Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal.
LSD: Hi Stefan and hi Miguel, could you please tell us how you met and how the Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal project started?
Digital 21 + Stefan Olsdal: We met a long, long time ago watching the sun and the moon doing a light concert together. And across the years we have made music together sometimes, just for ourselves, until we felt we had something special. Now we feel it is time to show and spread it out of our studios.
LSD: Your first EP Rebellion has been out for 2 months now, how have the reactions been so far?
D21+SO: We feel the reactions with “War” and “Rebellion” are beautiful. We just feel the music and feel our people. Both makes us feel great.
LSD: Your backgrounds are both in the live field, where and when does techno come into the picture for both of you?
D21+SO: Techno is all around. From the caves of the cavemen to the last day of the world. It’s in the beat of our hearts. So it is in our lives from the beginning and we hope that it will be until the end.
LSD: With this project do you see yourself more as belonging to the techno world or the live band world?
D21+SO: Live band for sure… We are musicians. Playing music live and feeling the music alive is the best.
LSD: Can you tell us a little more about the ideas behind the remixes and the choice of Dave Clarke and Alex Guerra as remixers?
D21+SO: We obviously gave them complete freedom to do what they wanted…so all we can say to you is enjoy it!
LSD: Rebellion and War, the title of your tracks carry quite a heavy meaning, especially in the current tense international context. The music is also very tense, always on the brink. What are you trying to say here?
D21+SO: We talk about the war inside… And the rebellion inside… The main thing is not what we feel…The main thing is what you feel and what you want to say… So… You just see the news and look inside to see what you feel about it… And what you want to say about it…
LSD: You are going to be going on tour soon if we are correct? The videos we have seen so far look very interesting. Are you going to be touring with the full live setup and what can we expect from a Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal gig?
D21+SO: Yes…The full live set up with all the musicians and the String Quartet and the videoart on the screens. We think it’s better not to expect anything in a gig. We think the best way is to go to live the experience with us and feel it as much as possible. This is how we feel about it.
LSD: What’s next for your project in terms of releases? Another single? The album?
D21+SO: We dont know yet. We will see it very soon and we’ll post it in our FB.
