Dj, producer and musician Billy Bogus has been in the music scene since the early 90’s. How would we define his sound? Italo Disco, Cosmic, Slo Motion, Electro or as he calls it “snuff disco”. Billy is the labelhead of Pizzico Records and has released music – apart from his own label – on imprints such as Nang, Speciale Records, Barking Dogs, Mad on the Moon and Black Magic Records.
My name is Niccolo Bruni but you might know me as Billy Bogus. I was born in Modena (North of Italy) and grew up in Modena, i love my city. When I was a child my idol was Michael Jackson, because Thriller sounded great!. When I was eighteen, I started buying Technics 1200 and lot of drum n’ bass, downtempo records and playing them in my room. It was then when I realised that electronic music was my soul food and decided to buy a sampler and some synths and start making music, always in my room. Since then I played in a lot of Italian clubs, abroad as well.
One of the best gigs I played was Brancaleone (Rome) with Donato Dozzy, it was kind of live set. It was so much fun playing live instruments on a dj set and seeing people dancing and screaming, i still do it in my set, i think it’s a perfect combination between instrumental approach and dj attitude. People can feel it. One of the best gigs I have been to was Dj Food at Covo (Bologna) in1996 or so, it was great and truly inspiring for me. I loved the blunty ibes, sample cuts and their visionary hip hop touch.
Now I live as always in Modena, i told you guys, i love this small city ;) with my girlfriend Elisa. In my house you can find nice pics on the wall, we both are in love with photography, design and shit like that and my refrigerator is usually full with Tortellini! it’s a typical dish of my town, so good… And handmade chicken nuggets as well, Elisa is a kitchen sorceress! I enjoy taking pictures of my town, ride the streets with my bicycle, reading books…. In short getting older and watching obscure movies a lot. I can spend hours doing that, cutting video samples and bugging my girlfriend with long-winded and improbable reviews….One of my favorite places to visit is New York, because NYC is everything, no more need to explain.
On weekdays I work in my studio, managing my label Pizzico Records and artists thereof, remixing other artists or producing my own stuff, listening to records from dusk till dawn and on weekends I usually play in clubs or events, visit exhibitions, try to have good time and possibly rest my ears on Sunday.
My favorite song at the moment is Nico Fidenco’s Living In The Future, just 0:46 seconds but yes, he was living in the future. A film I watched lately and really liked was Trouble in Mind by Alan Rudolph. The last series I watched and loved was True Detective (no i’m not that original here).
I am very inspired by movies and readings. My dream is to make a good work with music and people i love. My worst nightmare is to waste stuff and ideas, everything should be used in life.
I love my country as source of art and inspirations and hate my country as political class and average way of thinking.
I am addicted to music and video samples, I just cannot stop eating biscuits when i’m working in my studio.
I get totally fucked up, when I ‘m caught by Elisa while eating lot of biscuits… The next day I need to eat less biscuits, definitely..
Local Suicide reminds me of the definition i would give: GLOBAL SUICIDE, LOCAL RENAISSANCE, that’s probably what we’re all living and what we are going to.
Tomorrow I’m gonna work on some fashion shows. Next month I have to finish working on next Pizzico releases. Next year i want to come to Munich and do a gig! In 10 years I hope to stay young for my younger girlfriend and shoot a film that tells my youth, it’s all about youth….
If I wasn’t a dj, I would be a tramp dj. If my life was a Hollywood movie, Tim Robbins would have the main role, because he’s the only tall as me (2 mt). If I could have sex with anyone, it would be my girlfriend, hey guys don’t mess with that ;)
If I was a car, I would be a Citroen Pallas, afro music icon. If I was an animal, I would be a football player. If I was a drug I would be Charas. If I was an invention, I would be a doorstop, i hate wind!. If I was an object, I would be a vintage 80’s telephone. If I could date myself, I wouldn’t do that at all.
If I could play with anyone it would be my childhood friends… we used to group into gangs and beat up, sooooo fun!. I would like to collaborate with director Abel Ferrara doing a soundtrack for one of his movies or documentaries.
If I had only one wish, it would be doing something that affectively remains, not necessarily in music, even in human relations.
I would never believe the hype, because Public Enemy told me that when i was a child.
My word of advice to the reader would be to postmodern.
