Katja Ruge is without a shadow of a doubt one of the leading figures of Hamburg’s art and music scene. Her talents know no limits.

Through her work Katja combines her two big passions: photography and music. She is one of the music scene’s most renowned photographers. She begun taking pictures in the 90’s and hasn’t stopped ever since. From legendary synths to highly influential artists like Björk, Aphex Twin, Marc Almond, Dj Koze and Jennifer Cardini, not many of our favorite musicians and djs of the past couple of decades have escaped Katja’s lens. Her most recent exhibition Ladyflash includes 100 iconic photos of top notch female musicians such as Peaches, M.I.A., Tori Amos, Beth Ditto, Shirley Manson and Helena Hauff and has received critical acclaim worldwide.

Katja is not only a music connaisseur, but also an active player in the music scene.”Kann denn Liebe Synthie sein?” (“Can Love Be Synth”) is her exciting moniker. Dj, party organizer and music maker, this superwoman is as adept behind the camera as she is behind the decks. Her events showcase both emerging and more established talents, that join her to create a very special atmosphere and unforgettable nights at one of Hamburg’s best party locations Golem, very close to Reeperbahn and the port.

You would think this blondie with the red lipstick, big smile, exquisite taste and warm heart can only exist in a cult movie, but nope, she is as real as it gets. And if you get to meet her, there’s no doubt you will too be enchanted by her.

We are happy to let you get a bit closer to Miss Ruge through this intimate and funny fill-in-the-gaps interview.

My name is Katja Ruge but you might know me as “Kann denn Liebe Synthie sein?” ;) (“Can Love Be Synth”). I was born in Schönberg, Germany and grew up near Hamburg on the countryside in a little village.. When I was a child my idol was Philip Oakey the singer of The Human League, because I loved his defined Look with Make Up, fashionable outfits and of course best known for his crazy haircut.. When I was 17, I started to take photos.. It was then when I realised that this maybe become something that I`d love to do for the rest of my time being on this planet and decided to decide nothing and let it happen.. Since then I guess it happened a lot and I became a photographer and later on (very late actually ;) ) a DJ..

One of the best gigs I played was just a few weeks ago with lots of colorful disco lights & friends & Cinthie from Berlin at the Club Golem in Hamburg.. It was so much fun because there was so much LOVE and a hint of Spring in the air..
One of the best gigs I have been to was Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit at Planetarium Hamburg.. I loved the trippy combination of Space and Music a lot..

Now I live in Hamburg with a great flatmate and two cats.. In my house you can find a themed color experience and my refrigerator is usually full with Guacamole, Hummus, Lemons, Goat Cheese and Blueberrys.. I enjoy loving, living, dancing, walking, sleeping, partying, reading, watching, makin`music, chillin`, good company and takin`photos a lot. I can spend hours in the Synthesizerstudio Hamburg with my buddy Frank Husemann.. One of my favorite places to visit is a beach at the Baltic Sea, because I can go there quickly if I need to step out and always feel refreshed and energised when I return..

On weekdays I do everything people do on the weekend and on weekends I usually do what people do as well on weekends..

My favorite song at the moment is Yaya (A 707 Exercise) – Strong Edits. A film I watched lately and really liked was the movie in my head the last few days.. The last series I watched and loved was the one I had never time for and will never have:).

I am very inspired by LOVE.. My dream is to see my photo exhibition “Ladyflash” in Berlin expanded with lots of other amazing women in photography.. My worst nightmare is to loose touch..

I love you and you and you and hate is a word and feel that makes everything in this world wrong..

I am addicted to takin`photos of People and Synthesizer`s ;), I just cannot stop listening to Music and loving Life..

I get totally fucked up, when I drink too much Whiskey Sour.. The next day I need to have a good late dinner at Cafe Gnosa in Hamburg..

Local Suicide reminds me of really extremely good times..

Tomorrow I relax, it`s Saturday.. Next month I can be everywhere. And I will.. Next year As well.. In 10 years I hope and I might sit with my friend Andrea on Ibiza and save Donkeys. I mean real Donkeys ;)

If I wasn’t a photographer and the person who I am now I would try to become that person, I would be a Human Being that loves Life like I do now..
If my life was a Hollywood movie, I would go on a roadtrip to Zabriskie Point and would have the main role, because I really want to experience this film in real.. If I could have sex with anyone, it would be the one person I had Sex with lately..
If I was a car, I would be a fast red one that glides elegant round the curve.. If I was an animal, I would be a cat of course.. If I was a drug I would be Extasy with an X.. If I was an invention, I would be the machine with a soul you ever dreamt of.. If I was an object, I would be an objective or so called lens. You see through me. Which already happens sometimes ;) . If I could date myself, I would totally go for it..

If I could play with anyone it would be Rüftata 110, I love this guy.. I would like to collaborate with Nile Rodgers, I love this guy..

If I had only one wish, it would be pressing reset and heal the world..

I would never say never, because you absolutely never know what`s around the corner..

My word of advice to the reader would be to: Make LOVE & Be CREATIVE, let it out. Fuckin`believe in yourself, cause it`s not selfish it`s Energy that needs to be shared..
