LSD Faze Time: DJ Matuss

On September 16th, DJ Matuss will drop her fifth release on Absence Seizure, the New-York based imprint she runs with old-school acid-house head Abe Duque.

The records that Matuss puts out are of the understated kind. After-party friendly, her tracks favor subtlety over outward bang, always navigating trippy and strangely melodic edges. They’re the kind of growers that end up with a permanent spot in your record bag.

With the release of Seizure No.5 just around the corner, we hooked up with Matuss for a spot of LSD Faze Time. Dig in.

My name is Julia. I was born in Ukraine and grew up all over the world. When I was a child my idols were Bruce Lee & Michael Jackson, because I wanted to be like them. When I was 6, I started piano. It was then when I realised that music makes me cry and decided to dedicate my life to it. Since then I did that exactly.

One of the best gigs I played was Avalon. It was so much fun to experiment and exchange tons of energy. One of the best gigs I have been to was Kraftwerk & Prodigy. I loved all the madness.

Now I live in three different cities with a bunch of awesome people. In my house you can find records, cables and clothes and my refrigerator is usually full with cucumber and ice cream. I enjoy them and eat a lot. I can spend hours making music. One of my favorite places to visit is New-York, because it’s badass.

On weekdays I work and on weekends I usually work.

My favorite song at the moment is Experience – Together. A film I watched lately and really liked was Amy. The last series I watched and loved was American Dad. I am very inspired by Nic Fanciulli. I love koalas and hate cockroaches. I am addicted to music, I just cannot stop dancing.

I get totally fucked up, when I get 100 thoughts at the same time in different languages. The next day I need to live a life of a vegetable.

Local Suicide reminds me of what some people say about vinyl only concept :)

Tomorrow I fly. Next month my new release AS005 is out. Next year I move to Europe. In 10 years I hope to make timeless music pieces.

If I wasn’t a DJ, I would be a ninja.

If my life was a Hollywood movie, Stitch would have the main role, because he is my soulmate. If I could have sex with anyone, it would be Roger the alien.

If I was a car, I would be a Audi R8. If I was an animal, I would be a killer whale. If I was a drug I would be part molly, part heroin. If I was an invention, I would be the synthetizer. If I was an object, I would be a unidentified flying object. If I could date myself, I would run and hide.

If I could play with anyone it would be Sting. I would like to collaborate with Jamiroquai.

If I had only one wish, it would be to stay healthy.

I would never do drugs, because I don’t know how to stop.

My word of advice to the reader would be to stay motivated. It’s been a battle. I have 2 quotes printed and framed, right above the station: “In the darkest hour the brightest light shines” and “Decide what it is you want. Write that shit down. Make a plan & work on it. Every. Single. Day.” It may be cheesy, but…Whatever works, you have to keep making music and stay focused. Always.
