Electric Ocean People hail from Hamburg, Germany and go for minimalism and DIY. In audio and video. Something not so common for an indie band. But probably because they are not just another indie band. Read their interview, watch their videos and listen to their music and you will know why.
Our names are Julia, Mario and Christopher but you might know us as Electric Ocean People.
We were born in Hamburg and grew up in Hamburg, too.
In our childhood our idols were John Lennon, Freddy Mercury and the Spice Girls, because our parents had a good taste in music.
We met in 2008 at a house party and Christopher tried to punch Mario in the face. In 2009 we decided to start a band and not punch each other. Since then we started to write songs together.
One of the best gigs we played was at the Glashaus in Bayreuth 2011. It was so much fun. One of the best gigs we have been to was Radiohead in Berlin 2012. We loved everything.
Now we live in Hamburg with no pets. We meet every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and sometimes on Monday, Friday or Sunday.
We sometimes argue when we meet on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but then we drink some more wine and apologize for what we’ve said.
We enjoy trumpets and 80’s music a lot. We can spend hours on the internet, listening to five-second loops. One of our favorite places to visit is our rehearsal room, because the room is mostly warm and dry.
On weekdays we sleep and on weekends we usually sleep, too.
Our favorite songs at the moment are Efterklang’s “Hollow Mountain”, Talk Talk’s “New Grass” and “Grace” by Jeff Buckley.
Some films we watched lately and liked was Wes Anderson’s „Moonrise Kingdom“, Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia” and Ulrich Seidl’s „Import/Export“.
The last series we watched and loved was Breaking Bad.
We are very inspired by the lack of things.
Our dream is to meet Phil Collins.
Our worst nightmare is to get eaten by an octopus (really!).
We love Angela Lanzbury and hate people talking while the band is playing.
We are addicted to the internet, we just cannot stop checking our e-mails.
We get totally fucked up, when we get too many drinks for free.
Local Suicide reminds us of an early 80’s hardcore fanzine with a lot of street – credibility.
Tomorrow we start to write a new album.
Next month we’ll still be writing.
Next year hopefully be done.
In 10 years we hope to still like what we’ve done 10 years before.
If we weren’t in a band, we would be astronauts.
If our lives were a Hollywood movie, Steve Buscemi and Steve Buscemi would have the main roles, because Liam Neeson was busy. If we were a car, we would be a car, that fantomas drove in the movies..
If we were an animal, we would be a hippopotamus. If we were a drug ,we would be xanax.
If we were an invention, we would be the internet. If we were an object, we would be a cable.
If we could date ourselves, we wouldn’t.
If we could play with anyone it would be Mark Hollis and Talk Talk.
We would like to collaborate with an Original New Orleans Brass Band.
If we had only one wish, it would be equal rights for everyone (yes!).
We would never become a metal band, because we don’t like leather.
Our word of advice to the reader would be to ignore bad advices by indie bands.
