LSD FAZE TIME: Franz Matthews

When he’s not creating psychedelic trippy music as Languages, Berlin-based DJ and producer Franz Matthews channels his creativity towards a more synth-based realm, with hints of retro disco, which is what you can enjoy on his first EP ‘Ostkreuz’ released on the London label Days Of Being Wild. Franz Matthews knows that music is just another language and what he conveys through it is his own personal cosmic journey from Ostkreuz to Rixdorf and back.

‘Ostkreuz’ is a 250 limited 12″ Vinyl and you can still grab yours over here.

My name is Franz Matthews but you might know me as one half of the bands Languages & PVA (always the bad one). I was born in Saint Brieuc, Brittany, France and grew up in the same lovely shithole. When I was a child my idol was Billy (Idol, in case you were not following), because I love bad jokes. When I was a child, I started playing the piano. It was then when I realised that I was only learning classical music and decided to start playing the guitar. Since then I wish I knew how to play classical music.

One of my best gigs I played was at the Rock n Solex festival in Rennes. It was so much fun I started insulting the crowd and went crowdsurfing on them.

One of the best gigs I have been to was Calexico at Vieilles Charrues in 2003. I loved hearing their filmic music while the sun was going down, a magical memory that reminded me of my year spent in the middle of the USA.

Now I live in Berlin with the one who is usually my +1 on a guest list. In my house you can find a very cool marimba coming from Guinea and my refrigerator is usually full with Salmon, I’m a posh bitch. I enjoy Guitars, Basses, Synth, Synth, Synthesizers and more Synthesizers a lot. I can spend hours tweaking these little synth knobs. One of my favorite places to visit is airports and train stations, because they’re gonna take me to new places.

On weekdays I spend a lot of time in my studio working on my projects and on other people’s babies and on weekends I usually go away from the studio to test my resistance to alcohol.

My favorite song at the moment is the one I’m currently listening to in great Local Suicide mix while answering this interview. It starts at minute 12 in the mix they did for Something Spaecial Vol.79. I have no fucking clue what it is but it sounds amazing. A film I watched lately and really liked was Manchester by the sea, love how cynism blends so well with a Drama. The last series I watched and loved was House of Cards, I’m right in the middle of it, don’t spoil.

I am very inspired by Manuals and how things work. My dream is to continue living a life full of creativity and inspiration until my very last drop of life on this earth… and also to go to Japan sometime soon.. My worst nightmare is losing this dream.

I love the honest & trustworthy people, the dreamers, the slightly deranged, the ones not taking everything too seriously and hate the ones that don’t belong to the previous groups.

I am addicted to lists, I just cannot stop eating Kinder Schokolade.

I get totally fucked up, when I forgot to eat first. The next day I need to eat oysters.

Local Suicide reminds me of the really cool parties they throw at Bohnengold and that I should go more often to.

Tomorrow I will make a bad rehearsal with my band Languages to be able to play a good show on Saturday at Urban Spree! Next month I’m off to Paris to finish on our upcoming PVA release. Next year we’re playing at Coachella with PVA + I’ll have enough solo tracks to pop up with a cool Electronic live show, and I will still have a hard time with Snapchat. In 10 years I hope I’ll have managed to save a bit of money for my old days, that I’ll have a way bigger studio with way more useless stuff in it, and that there will be peace on earth.

If I wasn’t a Producer & DJ, I would be a world-traveller.

If my life was a Hollywood movie, Reggie Watts would have the main role, because I’ve always wanted to have an afro. If I could have sex with anyone, it would be Pamela Anderson, when I was 16.

If I was a car, I would be a VW Combi. If I was an animal, I would be an eagle so Seal could sing songs about me. If I was a drug I would be the song you hear over and over at Disneyland. If I was an invention, I would be the internet. If I was an object, I would be a lava lamp. If I could date myself, I actually already did it in a videoclip where I dated a woman version of me. But that video is not online anymore and it is better so, for our sanity.

If I could play with anyone it would be Soulwax or LCD Soundsystem. I would like to collaborate with Michel Gondry on a videoclip.

If I had only one wish, it would be nasty.

I would never put unsalted butter on my bread, because I’m from Brittany.

My word of advice to the reader would be to take your phone and call somebody you haven’t talked to in a long time, that’ll make you both happy.
