Canadian techno head Marc Houle dropped his latest album Sinister Mind last spring on his label, Items & Things. The Sinister Mind Remixes is coming out tomorrow featuring remixes by Chloe and Sian that you can get here. Houle has released for ten years on Richie Hawtin’s label, M_nus, and also on Innervisions, before founding Items & Things with music partner Magda a few years ago. Houle is also well-known for playing live sets instead of regular DJ sets and for his passion for synth gear… read his Faze Time to discover more about him as an artist and as an endearing person.
My name is Marc Houle. I was born in Canada and grew up in Windsor. When I was a child my idol was Mr Rogers, because he was kind and had weird friends. When I was little, I started playing the drums. It was then when I realised that making music was the best thing in the world and decided to start playing keyboards. Since then I surrounded myself with them.
One of my best gigs I played was Down & Out in Buenos Aires. It was so much fun playing with Magda and Troy.
Now I live in Berlin with my dog. In my house you can find lots of black clothes and my refrigerator is usually full with hot sauces. I enjoy cooking and sleeping a lot. I can spend hours playing old video games. One of my favorite places to visit is Tokyo, because it’s full of weird crazy things. On weekdays I make tracks in the studio and on weekends I usually travel around playing shows. My favorite song at the moment is The Cure – A Forest. A film I watched lately and really liked was the new star wars Rogue One. The last series I watched and loved was Tailer Tinker Soldier Spy (1978).
I am very inspired by early minimal synth music. My dream is to retire on a farm and rescue animals. My worst nightmare is missing a show because I messed up.
I love toro and hate anise.
I am addicted to the Juno 60, I just cannot stop making cheesy synth solos.
Tomorrow I will be driving through Colombia and eventually ending up in NY. Colombia’s been great and I’m anxious to get some Christmas shopping done in NY before my show there. Next month I was thinking about tearing apart my studio and redoing it all. January’s a great time for that since, in Berlin anyway, there are no distractions cause it’s dismally grey and dark. Next year I’m hoping to take on more interesting projects as well as some cool collaborations with people I normally wouldn’t. It’s time to branch out a bit I think. In 10 years I hope self driving cars rule with no more traffic lights existing, no more parked cars and not a single car horn heard. I hate traffic :)
If I wasn’t a musician, I would be a gardener or zoo keeper.
If my life was a Hollywood movie, Memento would have the main role, because I have a memory like a goldfish. If I could have sex with anyone, it would be fun.
If I was a car, I would be a 1983 lotus esprit turbo. If I was an animal, I would be a Panda. If I was an invention, I would be a Drinking Bird. If I was an object, I would be a Slinky.
If I could play with anyone it would be Robert Smith. I would like to collaborate with New Order.
If I had only one wish, it would be unlimited wishes.
I would never stop using the 808, because it’s the best drum machine ever made.
My word of advice to the reader would be to stop reading interviews and start making music.
