Baptist Mondowski is one of the uprising new talents in the techno scene. Hailing from Bordeaux he learnt how to play the guitar in his early teens while being inspired by bands like Oasis and The Jesus & Mary Chain, followed by drums, bass & piano while listening to 80s synthesizer music from the likes of Depeche Mode and The Cure. Around 2004, after listening to a Death In Vegas, record he got to explore further electronic horizons and soon after started to have his own residency & event series at iBoat, and later in Lyon’s famous club DV1. Since then he himself released many edits, remixes all over the place and EP’s on labels like Rock To The Beat, being supported by artists such as Chloe, Yan Wagner, Squarewave & Dimitri Veimar.
At the moment, Mondowski is working on his third EP as well as various other projects such as his band Drift, in which is works with his brother, and a new project called D8T, with Markus Gibb. Find out more about him below!
My name is Baptist but you might know me as Mondowski. I was born in 1992 and grew up in Bordeaux. When I was a child my idols were Noel & Liam Gallagher, because they are the best combination between a singer and a songwriter since The Beatles and they are no shy to say “Go fuck yourself”! When I was 9 or 10, I started playing the guitar. It was then when I realised that I could play in bands and decided to learn to play more instruments like drums, piano or bass. Since then I got more interested into electronic music because I discovered Death In Vegas, the perfect mix between what I listened when I grew up and the future of music with synthesizers.
One of my best gigs I played was at Garorock Festival last year. It was so much fun I never saw a crowd like this, all the people screamed during the breaks and I had a drink with great artists like Massive Attack, Franz Ferdinand.
One of the best gigs I have been to was probably, The Chemical Brothers at Main Square Festival. I loved just because it’s perfection!
Now I live in Bordeaux. In my house you can find instruments, machines, books, vinyls… and my refrigerator is usually full with beers and cheese only. I enjoy jamming with my bests friends and drink a lot. I can spend hours producing music. One of my favorite places to visit is my mind, because It’s easy to be lost!
On weekdays I listen to music and produce, again and again and on weekends I usually go to play in clubs.
My favorite song at the moment is 1994 by Maud Geffray from Scratch Massive. A film I watched lately and really liked was WHIPLASH. The last series I watched and loved was Black Mirror.
I am very inspired by 80’s music like Cold-wave & New-Wave. My dream is to have my own big recording studio. My worst nightmare is losing my hearing.
I love my friends and hate people who make music for money or glory.
I am addicted to cigarettes, I just cannot stop to play in clubs.
I get totally fucked up, when I’m off. The next day I need to make the best bassline ever :)
Tomorrow I will try to not miss my train. Next month I’ll go to Berlin. Next year I’ll start my own label. In 10 years I hope to have children.
If I wasn’t a musician, I would be a film maker.
If I could have sex with anyone, it would be my girlfriend, for sure.
If I was a car, I would be a Fiat Spider 124. If I was an invention, I would be a phonogram. If I was an object, I would be a piano. If I could date myself, I would try to not fighting with me.
If I could play with anyone it would be Andrew Weatherall. I would like to collaborate with Scratch Massive, David Shaw, Yan Wagner.
