The uprising New York based producer & street artist Rookley is hot after releasing his debut single ‘Melatonin’ (buy here) on August 25th, 2017. The song will be part of his upcoming EP ‘Weak or Absent Signals’ which will also be released on the freshly founded label AIMEND. After studying guitar at a music academy for 7 years in southern Europe where he grew up he moved to New York City in 2014 where he got inspired by the local street art and electronic music scene and since then restlessly produced music under various names. Rookley has already produced a broad repertoire of tracks which will be released in the following months. Check out our LSD FAZE TIME interview with him below.
Hi, I’m Rookley. I was born in southern Europe. When I was a child my idol was my grandfather cause he is a badass. I remember him climbing to the rooftop of the house to rescue my toys. When I was 14, I started watching movies, especially the Italian stream (thank you Mr Rota). It was then when I realised that I wasn’t paying too much attention to the score – but rather to the music and how it was making me feel and decided to use music as a tool to express the images I had in my mind. Since then I started playing every object that could make a noise.
One of my best gigs I played was in 2006 at the local bar on the corner of my block. My granny decided to invite all her friends, killing my self-esteem and getting the place sold out. It was so much fun to see these “professional“ folkloristic dancers rocking to Highway to Hell. One of the best gigs I have been to was Radiohead at Glastonbury Festival.
Now I live in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn with my homies Biggie (Notorious) and Jay (Z). In my house you can find liters of green tee and turtles and my refrigerator is usually full with vegan food and roastbeef (medium rare). I enjoy using wired-shitty noises and making them sound good a lot. I can spend hours looking for the perfect sound from an old synthesizer or an old guitar. One of my favorite places to visit is Dubrovnik, because there are real pirates and also cause I spent some of my childhood over there.
On weekdays I eat and on weekends I usually drink.
My favorite song at the moment is 10dEAThbREasT by Bon Iver. A film I watched lately and really liked was City of God. The last series I watched and loved was Black Mirror.
I am very inspired by real humans. My dream is to write a soundtrack for a Hollywood movie. My worst nightmare is Gluten and melon.
I love the 90s and hate McDonald‘s.
I am addicted to stories behind graffiti and street art, I just cannot stop thinking about the poor Leo freezing on the ocean.
I get totally fucked up, when I accidentally move the nobs of an analog synthesizer, just before I recorded the sound. The next day I need to take a shit.
Local Suicide reminds me of Vice Mag in the 2000’s.
Tomorrow I go to a Moderat concert. Next month I go to Berlin. Next year I’ll answer the question. In 10 years I hope there will be a law that forbids the exposure of street art works without the approval of the artist.
If I wasn’t a musician, I would be a fisherman.
If my life was a Hollywood movie, I would be De Niro in Taxi Driver (a little happier thou). If I could have sex with anyone, it would be Keira Knightley and Ariana Grande, together.
If I was a car, I would be a sportbike not a car. If I was an animal, I would be a turtle-wolf. If I was a drug I would be Mescalin/ MDMA. If I was an invention, I would be Mayonnaise. If I was an object, I would be a walkman.
If I could play with anyone it would be Jamie xx. I would like to collaborate with Bon Iver.
If I had only one wish, it would be meeting up with Kim Jong Un and tell him that his haircut sucks.
I would never eat french Pizza, because com‘ on!
My word of advice to the reader would be to behave and do things which are the result of an inner thought, something that is already in you and remove those things which are driven by clichès and stereotypes of our generation. New is you. (do not listen to music on smartphones and tablets)..
