LSD Faze Time: Sandunes

sandunes 2

Sandunes is one of India’s most interesting producers. Her confident artistry and subtle productions strike a difference with her peers in a country where electronic music is still dominated by stadium sized EDM and trance. Her sound takes in the sparkles of future garage, the low slung cool of trip hop and the brain frazzling sound design of IDM, with her discography now boasting three EPs and last year’s ‘Downstream’ LP which you can listen to below. Curious to get to know her a bit more, we asked her to undertake the LSD Faze Time.

Get reading and catch Sandunes live at the stunning GOAT Festival, because is there really a better sounding option for the last weekend of January than watching Gilles Peterson, Marquis Hawkes, Herculs & Love Affair, Sandunes and more on the beach in beautiful Goa? No there isn’t so leave your job, book a one way ticket and go live like a hippy for a couple of months, it’ll do you good.

My name is Sanaya Ardeshir but you might know me as Sandunes. I was born in Jamshedpur and grew up in Pune and Mumbai. When I was a child my idol was The Mask (with the green face, from the film), because he was basically a magician. When I was about 20, I started dabbling with music production and synthesizers. It was then that I realised that making music and operating a DAW was some kind of magic and decided to allow the hobby to unfold into a bit of an obsession. Since then I have been making and performing music at every available opportunity.

One of the best gigs I played was in Telluride, Colorado, in the middle of a football field, which was in this stunning valley.. It was so much fun to travel with the purpose of performing, collaborating and creating new sounds and I’ve since been understanding better how I want to perform the music I make.
One of the best gigs I have been to was Iron and Wine at Shepherd’s Bush in London. I loved that it was stripped down and yet so full and emotionally moving.

Now I live in Mumbai with my piano and synthsizers. In my house you can find lots of studio bits and bobs, keyboards, synths, and yoga props. and my refrigerator is usually full with Nuts, veggies, yoghurt, fruit and almond butter.. I enjoy ‘Aha’ moments. Especially on topics like metaphysics, music making and mixing and Family time in n0-responsibility mode, and long distance running a lot. I can spend hours listening to an 8 bar loop I made and jamming to it. One of my favorite places to visit is New York, because I find it hilarious and inspiring at the same time. And it’s flooded with musicians.

On weekdays I am up early and in the studio as soon as I can get to it and on weekends I usually switch out of studio mode and try and bake or spend time outdoors.

My favorite song at the moment is Anna Meredith – Nautilus. A film I watched lately and really liked was Lo and Behold – Werner Herzog. The last series I watched and loved was The Good Wife.

I am very inspired by the awesomeness within the human condition. My dream is to be so aligned in the process of living life that things I think and say become a reality with n0 time buffer. My worst nightmare is get to the gig but forgetting all your gear.

I love slanting sunlight, making music, and the feeling of ‘right place – right time‘ and hate the feeling of ‘wrong place – wrong time’.

I am addicted to yoga. I just cannot stop making music.

I get totally fucked up, when I drink more than one glass of wine. The next day I need to run it out of my system.

Local Suicide reminds me of that feeling when you break all the rules.

Tomorrow I will be in aunt mode visiting my niece. Next month I’m collaborating with my new collective: DASTA ( Next year I will explore new geographies through the festival circuit. In 10 years I hope I will have finally acquired the Mask (yep, from the film) and will have super powers.

If I wasn’t a musician, I would be a dog walker.

If my life was a Hollywood movie, Albert Dumbledore would have the main role, because he’s pretty badass and would be so useful to have around.

If I could have sex with anyone, it would be the Mask??

If I was a car, I would be a badass mofo. If I was an animal, I would be a caterpillar …… If I was a drug I would be some next level yet undiscovered substance that activates your ability to teleport, levitate and caste magic spells. If I was an invention, I would be a headset that lets you see into the future. If I was an object, I would be a Fender Rhodes . If I could date myself, I would probably be a bit of a narcissist.

If I could play with anyone it would be Thundercat. I would like to collaborate with Nils Frahm.

If I had only one wish, it would be to have access to teleportation, levitation and perhaps telepathy…

I would never commit to the dark side, because you gotta hang out where it’s sunny!

My word of advice to the reader would be to take it easy and listen to the music you love.
