Dance music albums without concepts are cool. Dance music albums without concepts give the author permission to go straight to the point and unleash the bangerz without having to swing by the obligatory ambient interludes and arty fillers. Dance music albums without concepts are like bypassing the fizzy water and slurping the squishee straight from the nozzle. It might make you sick but so will life, so treat yourself.
Spencer Parker knows how to jack a dancefloor like few others. The man behind the much-loved Work Them imprint (Dan Beaumont, Young Male, P.Leone, Radio Slave…) has been at it for the best part of 15 years now and last month released his second album “Dance Music”, an album he describes as “something honest”, with “no real concept behind, […] tracks he plays in his sets and tracks he want people to dance to”. Hence the title.
And live up to its title it does. From the slowmo bleep chug fiesta of “It Was Just A Dream” (a Weatherall fave), the immoral booty electro of “Nights And Weekends” or the absolute jackhammer of a track that is “You’re Under My Control Now”, Parker delivers on all fronts. Whether you play house, techno or the tons of shades inside and outside of the paradigm, this is a record that will sort you out of many situations, bring synergy to your preferred club and make your life that little bit better.
Split across three EPs, “Dance Music” is out now on Work Them Records. Catch Spencer Parker doing what he does best on November 23rd at Warehouse Project in Manchester, on November 24th at the Admiral in Glasgow and November 30th at Plano B in Porto.
Spencer, the floor is yours…
My name is Spencer Parker but you might know me as Spennifer Hudson / The Queen Of The Night. I was born in a hospital and grew up in a galaxy far, far away (ok, Croydon). When I was a child my idol was Sabrina, because of her singing voice, obviously. When I was a young man, I started playing the records. It was then when I realised that I am no.1 and decided to continue being no.1 (forever). Since then I have remained no.1. One of the best gigs I played was the Work Them Records party at Panorama Bar with ItaloJohnson, DJ Richard, Sven Von Thülen and Dan Beaumont. It was so much fun because they are all amazing djs and lovely people too and thats the triple truth, ruth! One of the best gigs I have been to was Nicky Siano playing at The Black Flamingo in NYC on a Thursday night. I loved who I was dancing with.
Now I live in Berlin with lots of records and an absolute cunt of a an upstairs neighbour who is always banging on my fucking ceiling and doesn’t seem to appreciate Underground Resistance OR Whitney Houston, no matter how loud i play them ?!??! In my house you can find me, totally and utterly alone (often playing the records) and my refrigerator is usually full with depressingly healthy food (and a bottle of really good Champagne). I enjoy going to the movies and I go a lot. I can spend hours watching movies – didn’t we just cover this?!?! One of my favorite places to visit is TOKYO, because SHOPPING!!! On weekdays I go to McFit and on weekends I usually go back to McFit, but just to hang out in the showers. My favorite song at the moment is Daniel Caesar feat Kali Uchis “Get You”. A film I watched lately and really liked was “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot”. The last series I watched and loved was This Is Us. I am very inspired by my friends. My dream is to not wake up. My worst nightmare is waking up. I love myself and think I’m grand, I go to the movies and hold my own hand… and hate Cilantro. I am addicted to the game, motherfucker ! I just cannot stop, thats right, i just can’t stop ! I get totally fucked up, when I think about her. The next day I need to try not to.
Local Suicide reminds me of a long ass interview i once did to promote my album thats out on 12/10/18 ;)
Tomorrow I will try again. Next month I’ll try to keep going. Next year I’ll hopefully still be here.
If I wasn’t a DJ, I would be an unhappy motherfucker. If my life was a Hollywood movie, Selena would have the main role, because I bidi bidi want her to . If I could play with anyone it would be Jeff Mills (but i already did). I would like to collaborate with Kali Uchis. I would never stop being kind, ever.
My word of advice to the reader would be to not stop.
