Whilst making their fourth album ‘Hurt & The Merciless‘ (Counter Records), the rock outfit The Heavy went through some dark times. There was divorce, near break-ups and the hurdles of everyday life. It all feeds into the Bath quartet’s most exhilarating record yet. On the promo day in Berlin for their new long player singer Swaby and bassist Spencer Page took the time to answer our FAZE TIME.
Our names are Spencer and Swaby but you might know us as half of The Heavy.
We were born in Lebanon and Bath (UK) and grew up in Southend and Bath.
In our childhood our idols were Robert De Niro, Michael Jackson, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, because they’re awesome and innovative.
We met in Bath (UK) at Moles Club. In 2003 we decided to grow the band. Since then we travelled the world and made 4 albums.
One of the best gigs we played was Molotov in Hamburg in about 2007. It was so much fun because it was 150 capacity with about 300 people in it. One of the best gigs we have been to was Spencer: The Prodigy in 1995 when I was definitely too small to be there. Kelv: Digital Underground at The Moon Club in Bristol. Insane gig because they hadn’t bought out The Humpty Dance yet and debuted it there. Everyone went fucking nuts to the now hiphop classic.
Now we live in Bath with our partners.
We sometimes argue when Spence cheats at Pro Evolution Soccer.
We can spend hours buying vinyl, talking about vinyl. Eating… One of our favorite places to visit is New York, because of the music, the art, the architecture, culture, pace, food. Everything. Great atmosphere.
Our favorite songs at the moment are Kelv: Missy Elliot and Pharrell ‘WTF’. Spencer: Bite The Buffalo ‘Keys To Your Coffin’.
Some films we watched lately and liked was The Revenant.
The last series we watched and loved was Making A Murderer.
We are very inspired by 1950s, 60s, early 70s. Also 90s hiphop.
Our dream is to live happy.
We love music, film, family and hate Negative energy. And Liverpool FC..
We are addicted to tea and marmite.
We get totally fucked up, when we have something to celebrate. Or nothing to celebrate. Or when we’ve put Dan (our guitarist) to bed.
Tomorrow Spencer is going to see his Mum.
Next month we will go to Austin Texas for SXSW and tear up 6th Street.
Next year has not been planned…
In 10 years we hope to still be making great music.
If we weren’t musicians, Spence would be an aspiring comic writer or a goat.
If our lives were a Hollywood movie, Steve Harvey and Steve Harvey would have the main roles.
If we were an animal, we would be a wolf.
If we were a drug, we would be the best.
If we were an invention, we would be a telekinetic sampler AKA The Psychic Sampler.
If we were an object, we would be a an egg.
If we could date ourselves, we wouldn’t turn up.
If we could play with anyone it would be The Rolling Stones circa 1972.
We would like to collaborate with Jack White, Dan Auerbach, David Bowie (RIP), Wing, Pharrell.
If we had only one wish, it would be no more bombs or guns..
Our word of advice to the reader would be to check yourself before you wreck yourself.
