After leaving her home Sochi – in southern Russia – in her early 20s Yulia Niko has gotten attention internationally for her DJ sets as resident at both Verboten (NYC) & Heart (Miami) and her releases on labels such as Rebellion, Get Physical, Baile Musik, Armada, Nervous, Hottrax and many more.

In 2016 the young Berlin-based producer & DJ founded her own label TochnoTechno where she released tunes by Fahad Haider, BVDC, Oleg Mass, Tripmastaz and many more.

Yulia also is featured on Damian Lazarus’ latest ‘Spirits II’ Compilation which will be released via his label Crosstown Rebels on November 23rd, 2018 (pre-order here). Check out our LSD FAZE TIME interview with her below!

My name is Yulia Snoz but you might know me as Yulia Niko. Niko is my Dad’s name. I was born in 1990 and grew up in the South of Russia. When I was a child my idol was Madonna, because she was very artistic and fun and I couldn’t stop watching her crazy videos, trying to imitate her, both singing and dancing. When I was 15, I started playing music and became what is now called a “bedroom producer”, making bootlegs and mash ups with whatever equipment I had. It was then when I realised that music is my life and decided to give everything I can, to become an artist and be a part of the music industry. Since then I never gave up on music, except in about 2008, during my studies (Economics & Law). Ambitious (or crazy?) as I am, I had to pursue not one, but two majors. I soon realised that I had no intention what so ever, to be a lawyer or an accountant. I graduated and everything, but as of 2011 I went back into music full time.

One of my best gigs I played was in LA for Dialogue. It was so much fun but I am not entirely sure why it was such a memorable day for me! I arrived at the gig feeling like one of those zombies on The Walking Dead. My best friend and I were partying the night before, as I was moving to Berlin after the gig. So this was a goodbye of sorts, really. But when I started to play, the energy of the crowd was so uplifting, I felt so awake and “ready to rumble” lol. The fatigue disappeared, and all was well with the world. A perfect alignment of mind, spirit and sound. I think everything felt more intense because of the day before, with my best friend. and she was actually the main inspiration for my album “Alina” and I miss her a lot, now that we live on different continents..
One of the best gigs I have been to was in London. It was “The Thriller” (Michael Jackson). I loved the live show of course, but I think its been a huge inspiration, work wise. I cant wait to come back to see it again, I have seen Motown in New York 3 times as well.

Now I live in Berlin with me, myself and I. And I am very happy. In my house you can find a lot of sneakers, vinyl, and I’m addicted to those spa-like face masks and my refrigerator is usually full with fruits and greens for juices, because when I am home I try to eat the healthiest I can and detox a little from all the traveling. I enjoy the life in Berlin and being here is a continuous source of inspiration, self-reflection and it’s the perfect place to study music and production a lot. I can spend hours in music stores, browsing music instruments or vinyl. One of my favorite places to visit is a spa (sauna) called ‘center Vabali’, because you can spend all day there, tending to your body (and spirit as well!). No phones allowed either, which is great. Us Russians have a love affair with “Bany”a (sauna). Its something you do to reset your systems, cleanse yourself and wash off the negativity. Time stops when you’re in there and afterwards you feel reborn. On weekdays I usually just work on music at the studio or at home, doing yoga to keep things balanced, then back to music. On weekends I usually cook for my friends or go to dinner if I am not on the road at gigs. But really, if you’re doing what you love, its hardly “work” and therefore there’s no need to “get away from it” on the weekends. I love what I do; I think I could live in the studio if it wasn’t for seeing friends and family and, if course, traveling for gigs. My favorite song at the moment is Frank Sinatra – ‘New York, New York’ – It will always remain my all time favourite. A film I watched lately and really liked was Wild…. The last series I watched and loved was Black Mirror. I am very inspired by my mother. My dream is to have my own restaurant which serves Russian Cuisine. My worst nightmare is to not be able to go to the beach for a year. I love to travel and hate Indian food and any spices….no offence! I am addicted to nothing, I just cannot stop hustling. I get totally fucked up, when I don’t get enough sleep for a few days because of travelling and work. The next day I need to be in bed all day.

Local Suicide reminds me of Local Suicide. There is nothing else like it?!

Tomorrow I am going to have the best day ever. Next month I have my debut track out on Crosstown Rebels Spirits VA and play for their showcase at Watergate, which is also my first time at the venue! Two dreams came true for me this year! Next year I will be 29! In 10 years I hope to have 10 kids.

If I wasn’t a man, I would be a polygamist. If my life was a Hollywood movie, Julia Roberts would have the main role, because she is a romantic and mysterious woman. If I could have sex with anyone, it would be dangerous.
If I was a car, I would be a white Lexus RX. If I was an animal, I would be a horse. If I was a drug I would be Vitamin D. If I was an invention, I would be a piano. If I was an object, I would be a mattress. If I could date myself, I would become friends first.
If I could play with anyone it would be exciting. I would like to collaborate with smart people.
If I had only one wish, it would be to stay young forever.
I would never become a Politician, because I am too honest and sensitive.

My word of advice to the reader would be to try to learn to listen what your heart us telling you, it has all the answers.
