LSD presents: Überjazz Festival

For the last few years a little festival in Hamburg under the radar of the gigantic mass gatherings in the summer rose to more and more fame among music connoisseurs. Interestingly enough it grew nearly simultaneously with one of the biggest genre comebacks in music history, namely the resurgence of Jazz. Thanks to musicians like saxophonist Kamasi Washington, pianist Robert Glasper, bassist Thundercat and many others and of course also to producer, founder of the Brainfeeder label and grand-nephew of Jazz innovaters John and Alice Coltrane, Flying Lotus, the genre returned to the center of attention. Instead of being an old peoples’ dated dusty genre, listening to Jazz became hip again and once again young cats from all across the country come to attend a small festival in cold and rainy November-Hamburg called “Überjazz”.

What makes this comeback so noteworthy is the fact that it tossed its’ traditional reception mostly overboard and that nowadays Jazz permits a vast number of influences, so that a shuffled Dilla-Loop as a beat feels as natural in this music as a dissonant Brubeck-pianosolo did forty years ago. Jazz excorticated its’ old image, got that dust off its’ shoulders and once again became modern.

With a brilliant line up consisting of troupers like The Cinematic Orchestra, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids or Mark de Clive-Lowe and his “Church” project and on the other hand the hottest current Jazz has to offer like Sarathy Korwar, Yussef Kamaal, The Comet Is Coming and the mentioned Thundercat (and of course many more), this years’ Überjazz festival is studded with a range of musicians other festivals can only dream of.
