Winter has arrived and magic is in the air. A new self-titled EP from North Carolina’s self-described “gypsy soul” band is gaining buzz for its unique gospel-inspired sound. Vocalist Crystal Cosby describes “gypsy soul” as “a state of mind – freedom, movement fire and heart, even if it’s fragmented.”
Her biggest influences are Etta James, Grace Slick and Tori Amos, pioneers who “were torching the grounds with their guttural truths of the ache of love, revenge and survival,” she said.
The lead single is “Mississippi,” which tells the story of a dead slave haunting his slave master.
The lyrics even the score: “Freedom comes with retribution, no rest for the man with that sound. Sultry satisfied, her blood boils ancestor’s pride. she stomps her feet, pounding down, who’s your master now?”
